Five New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Mouth

A new year means a fresh start, a blank slate. It’s a great opportunity for us to set new goals and challenges for ourselves—starting with our teeth! Fortunately, improving oral hygiene habits is a simple fix. Plus, having a great dental routine is an important aspect of boosting your overall health this year.

Looking to make a resolution? Here are our top dentist-approved suggestions for your best oral health:

  1. Floss your teeth

Flossing might be the most overlooked healthy dental habit, but it is just as important as regular brushing. Flossing stops plaque from building up between your teeth, helping to prevent the development of cavities. 

  1. Cut back on sugar

A diet that is high in sugar isn’t good for your teeth or your health. Make it a goal to cut back on your sugar consumption this year!

  1. Quit smoking

Make 2020 the year that you finally quit smoking. Smoking can cause tooth discoloration, cavities, halitosis, gum disease, and oral cancers (as well as lung cancer). If you’re trying to quit tobacco products, try a sugar-free nicotine gum as a substitute. This can help curb your desire to smoke while promoting a healthier mouth and less tooth decay. 

  1. Stay hydrated

Drinking water is one of the easiest ways to keep your mouth healthy and happy. Water helps rinse away food debris left in your mouth after meals. Water is also great for your body and skin! This year, purchase a water bottle and commit to staying hydrated every day.

  1. Schedule a dental visit

According to the American Dental Association, about one-third of people don’t see a dentist yearly. Don’t be among them! Visiting your dentist regularly (twice a year) is a great way to catch and prevent dental problems before they cause you discomfort.
